District Of Columbia

Washington, DC is the capital City of the United States. It houses many of the government’s employees and their offices. DC took over the role of capital from Philadelphia on June 11, 1800.

DC is made up of approximately just 68.25 square miles and has roughly 600,000 residents.

Washington is a reference to George Washington and Columbia comes from Christopher Columbus.

Washington, DC is bordered by Maryland and Virginia as well as the Potomac and Anacostia rivers.

DC has many diverse neighborhoods in a relatively small area.

Smoking is not allowed in bars and restaurants and drivers must be hands free for their phones.
